How Waking Up Early Transformed My Life: The Power of Self-Care Routines

I never thought I would be a morning person. Not in a million years.

Late nights were my thing—nightclubs, after-hours, staying up until 3-4 AM. Even after having my first daughter, we were still the family staying up until midnight, bringing our kid everywhere. I never wanted to change. Until one day, I did.

Waking Up Early Was Not by Choice

As I got older, my sleep patterns changed. By the time I was 35, I started waking up at 4-5 AM, unable to fall back asleep, and when I finally drifted off again, my alarm would go off 30 minutes later, jolting me awake. The rush would begin—getting the kids ready, making lunches, barely having time to enjoy my coffee. My self-care routines were nonexistent, and I felt exhausted before the day even started. That all changed one morning when I decided to take control of my time.

The Turning Point: From Restless Nights to Clarity

Then, one morning, I thought… if I’m already awake, I might as well do something.

So, I went for a walk.

Just two laps around my neighborhood—nothing intense, nothing structured. But that morning, something shifted. I wasn’t just awake—I was awake inside.

From that moment, I met my soulmate sister—myself.

For the first time, I wasn’t reacting to my day. I was choosing how to start it. And that felt powerful.

That first walk wasn’t just about movement—it was about self-care in its simplest, most beautiful form.

The Power of Self-Care Routines in the Morning

I craved that feeling. The peace, the clarity, the stillness before the world woke up.

So I kept going.

Each week, I built on my new routine, giving myself time to grow into it instead of forcing drastic changes. Slowly, my mornings became something I owned—not something I rushed through.

Now, my self-care routines include:

Hydration First – I start my day with warm water, 1-2 tsp of apple cider vinegar, and a sprinkle of salt to wake up my body.
Movement Matters – I go to the gym 4-5 times a week, and on my rest days, I walk—outside in the summer, on my treadmill in the winter.
Intentional Mornings – I prepare my kids’ lunches, get myself ready, and wait until after the gym to truly enjoy my coffee.

On busy weekdays, mornings still move fast, but they no longer feel rushed. On days off, I slow down and soak in the quiet—a moment just for me, no distractions, no demands.

And since embracing these self-care routines, I feel like I have so much more time. More space to think, to create, to feel inspired. My mind is clearer. My energy is stronger.

I don’t just wake up anymore—I wake up with purpose.

How to Become a Morning Person (Without Overwhelming Yourself)

If you’re reading this thinking, I could never be a morning person, trust me—I understand.

But I didn’t suddenly start waking up at 5 AM, journaling for an hour, and meditating in the sunrise.

I started small.

I shifted my bedtime just 15 minutes earlier. Instead of trying to force a strict sleep schedule, I allowed my body to adjust naturally.
I set my alarm 15 minutes earlier. That extra time became mine—not for emails, not for work, but for me.
I kept things simple. I didn’t try to follow a “perfect” morning routine. I just gave myself a little more space.

And that space became something I craved.

When change feels good, it becomes easy.
